Gas storage levels in Europe have now reached 90% capacity and hit the crucial target set by the European Commission to ensure energy resilience during winter. This accomplishment is supported by GIE’s AGSI Transparency Platform’s data.
Initially set by the European Commission for the 1st of November 2023, the target was defined in response to the EU gas shortage that followed Russia’s incursion into Ukraine. Achieving it two months ahead of schedule illustrates Europe’s determination to prepare for winter and foster security of supply with gas infrastructure solutions.
“GIE members maintain a robust network for natural gas transport and storage. Currently, our priority is preparing Europe for the upcoming winter while ensuring supply security. Looking ahead, we’re integrating locally produced biomethane into existing infrastructure and advancing our infrastructure towards a hydrogen economy. This evolution will enable the accommodation of more renewable and low-carbon gases for sectoral decarbonisation and renewable energy system integration. Security of supply and decarbonisation are two sides of the same coin.”
Reminded Torben Brabo, GIE President.
“GIE takes pride in supporting the European Commission’s work in fostering a secure and decarbonised energy system for Europe. Providing transparency in the gas market through our platforms is integral to our approach. Over recent months, we have dedicated substantial efforts to enhance our transparency tools: AGSI has welcomed 11 new SSOs to its platform since 2022, marking full AGSI data coverage of 100% of EU27 countries for the first time ever. It represents more than 1100 TWh. We as well cover 100% of EU27’s LNG facilities on ALSI.”
Stated Boyana Achovski, GIE Secretary General.
