GIE publishes new edition of the Small Scale LNG map

June 25, 2018

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel in maritime and heavy road transport and as off-grid energy solution is gathering ground throughout Europe. For example, the number of operational LNG filling stations for road trucks has increased by 241% to 169 from 70 stations over the past year. The new GLE Small Scale LNG map published today provides the LNG industry and interested parties with an overview of the available, planned and announced small-scale LNG infrastructure and services in Europe.

LNG has great potential for replacing heavy fuel oil and diesel in freight transport and shipping due to its superior environmental performance. LNG has a much smaller carbon footprint and switching to LNG also has an immediate impact on air quality and therefore health:

• up to 25% less CO2;
• up to 90% less nitrogen oxide (NOx);
• negligible quantity of sulphur and fine particulates.

Also, LNG is an attractive solution for supplying energy to communities and industrial sites not connected to a pipeline network. Increasingly, LNG may also be produced using renewable gases, improving the environmental performance even further.

Wim Groenendijk, GLE President: “GLE will continue to ensure transparency and provide information on the most recent developments on LNG infrastructure in the market. It will also continue to be a key player in providing input and expertise on LNG infrastructure to the European institutions, regulatory bodies and other stakeholders.”

Note to editors

Gas LNG Europe (GLE) currently comprises 15 European LNG terminal operators from 9 countries, representing more than 90% of all the existing LNG regasification capacity in Europe. GLE is one of the columns of GIE, Gas Infrastructure Europe, the European association of the Transmission, Storage and LNG terminal Operators.

GLE is committed to promoting the development of a fully operational European internal market for LNG and the creation of a stable and predictable regulatory framework which is conductive to investments and which ensures transparency and non‐discriminatory treatment.
