Immediate, short and long-term priorities

for Europe’s gas infrastructure:

That was GRIDTech Conference 2022.

Earlier this week, Eurogas, Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), and the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) jointly hosted their inaugural conference ‘How European gas infrastructure can facilitate a secure, affordable and sustainable energy system’.

MEP Jerzy Buzek opened the full-day conference with a keynote speech to set the scene, referencing the ITRE’s report for the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Market Package Regulation, the Gas Storage Regulation and the cooperative actions needed to meet the commitments of the European Commission’s RePower EU Plan.

Representatives from the full gas value chain – gas grid operators, policymakers, regulators, and industry end-users considered how to address the challenges relating to the dynamic situation of Europe’s immediate and longer-term security of gas supply. In this context, the European Commission, Member State representatives and infrastructure operators outlined what is being done now, and what can be collectively achieved over the coming months and years, to minimise as far as possible any adverse impacts.

Speakers addressed the value of accelerating the roll-out of renewable and low carbon gases, like biomethane and hydrogen, and debated the important role of European gas grids to support the goals of the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Market Package.

Eurogas Secretary General James Watson said, “GridTech is a new milestone in annual energy conferences. It’s the first event that brings transmission and distribution operators together, with an eye on planning, and we want to hear from as broad a range of perspectives as possible – year after year.”

GIE Secretary General Boyana Achovski said, “This year’s edition was very timely. It was good to exchange among energy leaders and policymakers on the best way to overcome the short and long-term challenges the EU is facing. What’s clear is that the security of supply must go hand in hand with decarbonisation, and our industry put a lot of effort in that regard.”

Piotr Kuś, ENTSOG General Director commented: “ENTSOG was pleased to jointly host the event in the capacity of technical partner. Now is the time for bottom-up expertise and experience of the TSOs to meet the ambitious top-down policy measures, and we will continue to undertake the assessments, provide the good quality data and facilitate stakeholder dialogue.”
