GIE Secretary General @AchovskiBoyana joined ACER & industry leaders at @Eurogas_Eu conference, Ljubljana 🇸🇮

We discussed the region's security of supply & #gas infrastructure's solutions👇

How to get ready for next winter(s)?
What does the region's #energytransition look like?

GIE News! @ligparada steps over Arno Büx & becomes the new #GLE President. He brings solid expertise from holding various energy leader positions.

He succeeds Arno Büx, who, with this role, greatly contributed to EU energy security & #decarbonisation with #LNGterminals.

Greener Gases Storage is getting real: @uniper_energy #HyStorage's 1st test phase is successful!

Congrats to GIE members for achieving this milestone in EU's #decarbonisation.

Testing will proceed with @OpenGridEurope @RAGAustriaAG @SEFEGmbH & #NAFTA.

GRIDTech 2022

June 30, 2022

Immediate, short and long-term priorities

for Europe’s gas infrastructure:

That was GRIDTech Conference 2022.

Earlier this week, Eurogas, Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), and the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) jointly hosted their inaugural conference ‘How European gas infrastructure can facilitate a secure, affordable and sustainable energy system’.

MEP Jerzy Buzek opened the full-day conference with a keynote speech to set the scene, referencing the ITRE’s report for the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Market Package Regulation, the Gas Storage Regulation and the cooperative actions needed to meet the commitments of the European Commission’s RePower EU Plan.

Representatives from the full gas value chain – gas grid operators, policymakers, regulators, and industry end-users considered how to address the challenges relating to the dynamic situation of Europe’s immediate and longer-term security of gas supply. In this context, the European Commission, Member State representatives and infrastructure operators outlined what is being done now, and what can be collectively achieved over the coming months and years, to minimise as far as possible any adverse impacts.

Speakers addressed the value of accelerating the roll-out of renewable and low carbon gases, like biomethane and hydrogen, and debated the important role of European gas grids to support the goals of the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Market Package.

Eurogas Secretary General James Watson said, “GridTech is a new milestone in annual energy conferences. It’s the first event that brings transmission and distribution operators together, with an eye on planning, and we want to hear from as broad a range of perspectives as possible – year after year.”

GIE Secretary General Boyana Achovski said, “This year’s edition was very timely. It was good to exchange among energy leaders and policymakers on the best way to overcome the short and long-term challenges the EU is facing. What’s clear is that the security of supply must go hand in hand with decarbonisation, and our industry put a lot of effort in that regard.”

Piotr Kuś, ENTSOG General Director commented: “ENTSOG was pleased to jointly host the event in the capacity of technical partner. Now is the time for bottom-up expertise and experience of the TSOs to meet the ambitious top-down policy measures, and we will continue to undertake the assessments, provide the good quality data and facilitate stakeholder dialogue.”

Moderation was provided by Anne-Sophie Corbeau from the Center on Global Energy Policy.

Editorial notes

The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) was founded in line with Regulation (EC) 715/2009 and has played a key role in facilitating integration of the European gas markets, ensuring technical interoperability and providing security of supply by gas infrastructure planning. Looking forward, ENTSOG is contributing to the net-zero decarbonisation by 2050, in particular, by the integration of renewable and low carbon gases via future-proof gas transmission pipelines, in line with the EU energy and climate goals. More information on ENTSOG can be found on our website www.entsog.eu or contact info@entsog.eu.

Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) is the association representing the interests of European gas infrastructure operators. GIE members are active in transmission, storage and regasification via LNG terminals of renewable and low-carbon gases, including natural gas and hydrogen. Gathering 68 industry entities from 27 European countries, GIE perfectly embodies the multiple transitional decarbonisation pathways of the EU regions. The association’s vision is that by 2050, the gas infrastructure will be the backbone of the new innovative energy system, allowing European citizens and industries to benefit from a secure, efficient and sustainable energy supply.

Eurogas is an association of 65 companies spanning the length of the gas value chain. Our members cover gas wholesale, retail and distribution, along with companies manufacturing equipment and providing innovative solutions for services, like blending and methane emissions management. The purpose of Eurogas is to accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality through dialogue and advocacy about optimising the use of gas and gaseous fuels.

Note to editors

Who is GIE?

Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) is the association representing the interests of European gas infrastructure operators active in gas transmission, gas storage and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification. GIE is a trusted partner of European institutions, regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders. It is based in Brussels, the heart of European policymaking. GIE currently represents 70 member companies from 26 countries. GIE’s vision is that by 2050, the gas infrastructure will be the backbone of the new innovative energy system, allowing European citizens to benefit from a secure, efficient and sustainable energy supply.
