Recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive

The European Commission has proposed a revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (COM(2021) 802 final) aiming at fully decarbonised buildings by 2050. In response, Eurogas prepared a position that GIE fully supports. The paper presents the assets of gaseous solutions and the use of gas infrastructure to achieve zero emissions buildings.

 

Erik Kolstø, GIE Board Member: “Boosting the energy performance of buildings is critical to meeting EU’s ambitious energy savings and decarbonisation targets. Decarbonisation in the residential sector is a challenge and we need a wide range of heating solutions to reach these targets. In this position paper, we highlight the great potential of renewable and hydrogen molecules to support the EU in achieving its climate neutrality goals in the residential sector. Including such gaseous options in the mix of heating solutions will enable transition in the most efficient and sustainable way possible.”

 

Key recommendations

  • Make Zero Emission Buildings (ZEBs) future proof: Enable ZEBs to meet minimum energy needs by being able to use renewable energy irrespective of the grid used, the market player involved or the distance to the renewable energy sources. Keep the costs as low as possible and ensure that existing gas infrastructure can be used to supply renewable energy.

 

  • Ensure a balanced mix of modern technologiesEnable all modern and renewable-ready heating technologies to contribute.

 

  • Promote energy system efficiency: Enable the combination of different heating technologies, including modern gas solutions, to improve energy system efficiency.
