On 10 January 2023, Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) organised its workshop on “Showcasing the pathways & values of underground hydrogen storage”.
As an essential bridge between variable electricity supply options and hydrogen demand profiles, hydrogen storage is a key enabling technology required for the emergence of a hydrogen ecosystem. GIE unveiled the results of a unique study carried out by Artelys about the different values that this technology provided to the energy system and, for the first time, the quantification of these benefits in different use-cases.
With only a few weeks to go before decisive votes on the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Market Package, European policymakers and energy stakeholders discussed much-needed recommendations for hydrogen storage to deploy at scale.
