ApolloCO2: The first CCS hub in SE Europe

SUMMARY

DESFA plans to introduce the “APOLLOCO2” investment, the first large-scale midstream CCS project in South-Eastern Europe, aggregating gaseous CO2 from local emitters in Greece through a pipeline to a centralized liquefaction and temporary storage terminal, from which the captured emissions will be transported via vessels to a permanent storage site. The proposed location of the liquefaction and export terminal is Revythoussa island, where DESFA’s LNG terminal is located and where the aggregated CO2 will be liquefied on the onshore liquefaction unit, while, due to space constraints on the island, the liquefied CO2 (LCO2) will be temporarily stored on the FLSU, which will serve as a temporary CO2 storage solution, while also offering back-up liquefaction capabilities.

KEY FIGURES

  • The project will initially have a capacity of 3 Mtpa (Phase 1), expandable to 5 Mtpa (Phase 2).
  • The liquefaction process employs indirect heat exchange to prevent CO2 freezing and includes high-efficiency heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, and advanced monitoring systems for optimal integration and safety, along with innovative temporary storage facilities.
  • ApolloCO2 is currently included in the latest PCI/PMI list along with the Prinos CO₂ storage project promoted by EnEarth.

TIMELINE

First phase of the project
The project is currently at the FEED stage and is expected to be operational in 2029, aligned with the CO2 pipelines and emitters’ timetables.
