Hub COnet2 Norte – CO₂ transport, terminals & “virtual shipping” in Northern Spain

SUMMARY

Hub COnet2 Norte aims to develop CO₂ transport infrastructure, terminal facilities and virtual shipping services for hard-to-abate industries in Northern Spain. Captured CO₂ will be transported to reception terminals for permanent storage or further valorisation.

KEY FIGURES

  • More than 10 companies have expressed an interest in capturing and transporting their CO₂ emissions through the project.
  • Hub COnet2 Norte could help avoid approximately 3 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
  • The captured CO₂ will be transported through Enagás infrastructure, in cooperation with other partners where applicable.
  • The project will use LNG terminals in which Enagás participates, applying Scale Green Energy technology that uses the cold energy released during LNG regasification to liquefy CO₂.
  • The project will also handle biogenic CO₂, supporting the production of e-methanol and biofuels.
  • Hub COnet2 Norte is expected to contribute to both local and national economic development.

Project description

Hub COnet2 Norte is a planned CO₂ transport and terminal infrastructure project in Northern Spain. It aims to provide a transport solution for CO₂ captured from hard-to-abate industries, connecting industrial emitters with dedicated CO₂ terminals.

The project combines CO₂ transport infrastructure, terminal facilities and a virtual shipping model. Captured CO₂ will be collected and transported to reception terminals, from where it can be shipped to other terminals for permanent storage or further valorisation.

The project will make use of the LNG terminals in which Enagás participates. Technology developed by Scale Green Energy will use the cold energy available during LNG regasification to liquefy the captured CO₂ efficiently.

In addition to reducing industrial emissions, Hub COnet2 Norte will facilitate the transport of biogenic CO₂. This can support the production of renewable fuels such as e-methanol and biofuels. The project has been submitted as a Project of Common Interest (PCI).

“CO2necta contributes with innovative solutions to jointly advance our decarbonisation commitments, especially relevant in strategic sectors that cannot be decarbonised.”
